One Pulse Community Fund During the early hours of June 12, 2016, Orlando’s future changed forever. In this moment, a senseless act of violence took the lives of 49 victims, wounded 53, and emotionally impacted millions of lives throughout the world. Many of the victims are members of our community. As an undivided community we are united in strength and solidarity, keeping in mind the needs of those affected. The issues that will continue to arise in the aftermath of this tragedy will be culturally sensitive, thus we are ready to help our families in the process of healing. We must come together collectively, as a family, to address issues of acceptance within our own community. Latino Leadership, Inc. established the One Pulse Community Fund, with support from NALCAB – National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders, to meet the emergency needs of the families affected by this tragedy. The Fund will be an enduring investment in the local Latino community, especially and including LGBTQ Latinos. Latino Leadership, Inc. will use the Fund to provide financial support to those affected in the form of interest-free loans to help bridge the financial burdens associated with funeral and medical expenses and a wide range of other costs that have resulted from this terrible circumstance. We chose a loan fund for two key reasons – one immediate and one longer term. 1. Bridging to larger sources of support– We are aware that there has been an outpouring of gifts to support those impacted by the mass shooting. It takes time for charities to make funding available. It often takes even more time when there are language barriers, cultural barriers and other obstacles. In other disaster situations, we have seen families get into financial trouble while they are waiting to receive benefits for which they are eligible. A no-interest loan, together with culturally competent support can help victims to avoid these financial pitfalls in their time of crisis. 2. An Enduring Investment– We are planning for where the community will be when the cameras are gone and the immediate needs have been addressed. In three years, when all of the gift money is gone, it is our vision that the One Pulse Community Fund will still be a resource that particularly focuses on LGBTQ Latinos. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Thank you for standing with us to ensure that the community continually has what it needs to thrive.
